Week 10 of Pregnancy (Trimester 1 of Preganancy)

I still have really bad constipation – the doctor has put me on Lactulose (to draw moisture into the bowel and soften the stools) and Fybogel (to add bulk to the stools) which I have to take twice a day. I feel very uncomfortable, and because my bowels are so swollen, my belly looks bloated and my trousers are getting uncomfortable. I bought a couple of pairs of larger-size tracksuit bottoms, and some maternity trousers for work. But I feel so ridiculous having to wear bigger sizes already – I didn’t move into larger sizes until I was at least 14 weeks pregnant with Rosie.

We went to visit AJ’s mother this weekend. We were dropping Rosie off to spend a few days of the half-term break with her. AJ and I decided it would be too unfair to expect Rosie to keep this big secret from Liz while she was staying there, so we let her make the big announcement over lunch. I couldn’t tell if my mother-in-law was more shocked or excited. Rosie’s great-grandmother had the same reaction when we told her later that same day – I guess most people had assumed we had ‘closed the baby-shop’!

The fetus now has a recognizably human face – eyes, nose, mouth and external ears. The heart is fully formed and the lungs are growing inside the chest cavity. The stomach and intestine are formed and the kidneys are moving into their permanent positions. External sex organs start to form, although it would still be impossible to make out the sex on an ultrasound scan.
