I told my work colleagues about my pregnancy this week, and showed off the scan photo too. They are all pleased and excited, and of course it set off a string of birth and baby experience stories. But at least I can stop hiding my belly behind folders and tables now! I also took the plunge and went to the public swimming baths this week – 3 times!! I only go for half-an-hour, taking breathers at the edge of the pool between lengths. But it is good exercise (I am sure that the leg movements for breaststroke must be at least as good for loosening the groin and pelvis as squatting is), and I intend to go regularly from now on. When I am resting at the edge of the pool, I move my arms or legs in circles or kick vigorously, to keep my body moving. That way I don’t feel totally fat and lazy! An important part of taking of myself as a pregnant lady is looking after my teeth. I went to the dentist this week for a checkup. She said everything was fine and to continue with regular brushing and flossing until the next checkup in 6 months time. During pregnancy hormonal changes can cause gums to become swollen and bleed easily. Calcium stores are diverted to the growing fetus, which can also affect your teeth. Make sure you are getting adequate calcium in your diet, brush teeth thoroughly and avoid snacking on sugary drinks and foods. My baby is so active – apparently the sleeping and waking patterns of the baby will be similar to those he will have after birth. I don’t think I am going to get any sleep day or night! The fetus is starting to develop a covering of fine downy hair all over his body and face. This is called lanugo and is thought to help maintain correct body temperature. The lanugo disappears before birth, although sometimes just a little is left and disappears later.
