Week 35 of Pregnancy (Trimester 3 of Preganancy)

It has been a busy week, with Rosie at home for the Easter holidays. We have had little friends over to play, been to the cinema, shopping for summer school uniform and over to a colleague’s house to collect a big bag of baby-clothes.

Rosie came with me for my regular ante-natal, and was excited about hearing the baby’s heartbeat again. It wasn’t such a good visit for me. The baby is lying in the breech position – the midwife explained to me that if he is still in this position at 38 weeks, I will have to consider the possibility that I will not be able to deliver at the Birth Centre. In fact, none of the maternity units in my area will allow a vaginal delivery for a breech presentation (mid-wife led or hospital wards) – the only option is a caesarian section.

I came home and did a lot of research in my books and magazines, as well on the internet, into how to turn a breech baby. A lot of the suggestions seem rather drastic to me, and rather than risk damaging my baby or the placenta, I have decided to wait until the next ante-natal appointment to discuss the various methods with my midwife.

In the meantime, I will try some ‘encouraging’ exercises that seem to me to be relatively safe, given that I have had an uneventful, healthy pregnancy and have been keeping relatively fit too.

Soothing Music – 1 x daily for 20 minutes, I put a tape of soothing music on, with the headphones against my belly, just above my pelvis. The theory behind this is that the baby will turn his head towards the music.

As well as the above, I am being very careful about ensuring that my uterus is allowed to be as spherical as possible – sitting up straight without constricting my legs or chest against the lower or upper half of my belly. During Braxton Hicks contractions I lean forward into them to allow them to work more efficiently.

Baby is slowly becoming capable of making sense of the sounds he hears around him, although he will only hear what you hear at just less than half the volume!
